Study on Land use and Land cover change
Demographic pressure and poor land management have led to a strong and very rapid change in land use and land cover. Thus, agriculturally used areas, settlement areas and degraded land have increased significantly, while near-natural, still largely intact ecosystems have been degraded or destroyed over large areas. On the basis of historical aerial photographs, as well as recent, high-resolution satellite images, the land use change, and here especially the decline of forests, the composition and configuration of the landscape were quantified. This working package was carried out in close cooperation with the Survey of Kenya (Nairobi) under the supervision of Dr. Mike Teucher (MLU Halle).
